Operation Protective Edge: The Politics of Deception in Gaza
The year 1956 witnessed the first Israeli massacre in Gaza. People all over the world condemn and denounce the Israeli assault of Palestine, mass killing of civilian, mass destruction of houses, except for a few governments like US. Yet, the saga continues. Lives in Gaza, in the open- air prison have been balanced insecurely on obsidian with fire on each side.
Uncovering the real reason
In general, Gaza is everything for every Israelite. Scientists of Israel coordinating with the army exploit the province as expedient testing ground for advance experimental technologies. While the co- operate Israel lobby later repackage these technologies for global export. Gaza is a political ground for the Israeli government to improve electoral appeal, to silence the opposition, to divert from any form of domestic scandal. Battle training, experimenting new wares, developing new war tactics are military reasons.
The reason for the recent onslaught in Gaza, keeping away the publically articulated, but strategically trivial claims, mainly is to break the political and diplomatic isolation of the Israel in the occupying land. The long tenure, less conspicuous, strategically relevant role objective includes: enhancing strategic deterrence, deteriorating the enemy’s military pretentiousness, reaching a more conductive armistice of political arrangement.
The role of Main stream Media
Media have played main role in the ongoing strife in two ways. One, convincing the world nations in general, and the citizens of the Israel in particular, that Hamas is behind the missing of three Israeli teenagers. The government with the help of these main stream Medias was successful in concealing the death of teenagers, the investigation surrounding three suspects and infuriating revenge against the Palestinians. Secondly, though not fully successful, spreading the propaganda that Israel is defending itself against belligerence of the besieged Palestinians, even when the evidence or images depicts otherwise; even the number of death differs extensively, more than 187 Palestinians to none.
What really happened?
On June 12, three Jewish Israeli settler teenagers disappeared in the West Bank. The Israeli army took the incident as a vehicle for its journey of mass destruction and massacre. The army spent three weeks breaking into hundreds of homes and terrorizing their inhabitants in search of three youth. Around, 500 Palestinians were rounded up and incarcerated. Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, alleged Hamas behind the kidnap and he clamored the return of the teenagers. Netanyahu’s speech accusation was nothing but an irresponsible and cynical political show, for no evidence was produced for his claim of Hamas’s involvement in the kidnapping. Haaretz military correspondent Amos Harrel said that, ‘so far there is no evidence that Hamas’s leadership either in Gaza or abroad was involved in the kidnapping’. The death of youth was known by the government and the army from the first day of their appearance. A telephone recoding of one of the kidnapped, Gilad Shaer, reached the security services asking for help, sound of gunshots, groaning, and singing in Arabic was the initial evidence. The bodies were found abandoned with bullet holes and blood sample.[i] But when the deceptions were uncovered Israel has already murdered nine people in the West Bank and three in Gaza. There were a few responses from the Palestinians, thereafter. The government and main stream Media, now claim that Israel was mere responding to Hamas’s ‘nihilistic provocations’. ‘Acting in self- defense’, ‘protecting our citizens’, ‘they’ve started it first’, ‘no other government would accept that rockets rain down on its people’ were a few trivial responses articulated widely in public.
Main stream Medias has a different story
Despite the fact that Israeli strikes on Gaza have claimed lives of children, women and man, reaching the hit to 187 with another 1390 wounded; that among them 77% are civilians[ii], which include 35+ children and 26+ women; that not a single Israeli has reported to be died after the war broke; that banned DIME weapons are being used against the civilians in Gaza[iii], main stream Medias are so biased that they blame Hamas for being the sole culprit in the ongoing violence. A few of the headlines are given below.
Fox News: ‘Gaza Rockets Aimed at Israel: What Would you Do with Just 15 Seconds?’[iv]
Vox: ‘The Tragedy Never Ends, Palestinian Rockets Force Israeli Peace Conference to Evacuate’[v]
Human Rights Watch: ‘Indiscriminate Palestinian Rocket Attacks’.[vi]
The Wall Street Journal: ‘Israel Air Defense Intercepts More rockets as Fighting continues’
The New York Times: ‘Missile at Beachside Gaza Cafe Finds Patrons Poised for World Cup’[vii]
The blatant misrepresentation has reach to the extent that a news reporter of the ABC depicted injured Palestinians as Israelites.
Another misconception the Media repeats after the government is that Hamas is a terrorist organization, while the fact is that it is the democratically elected leadership in Gaza.
Repeating after Netanyahu
Leaders from different nations have commented in favor and against Israel in the new Gaza issue. While the Arab League General Secretary Nabil al Arabi, Venezuela President Nicolas Maduro, the foreign ministry of Iran[viii] and Saudi Arabian representative to the UN, Abdullah Al- Moullimi[ix] and few other countries strongly condemned the aggression of Israel on Gaza, the governments of US, UK, France, Germany and Ireland etc bluntly supported ‘Israel’s right to defend’.
The White House spokesmen Josh Earnest said: “We strongly condemn the continuing rocket fire inside of Israel and the deliberate targeting of civilians by terrorist organizations in Gaza”.
It seems that the American government is just replicating the Israel’s claim of Hamas being a terrorist organization, despite the fact that they are the democratically elected in Gaza and that ‘they’ve started it first’. Later today (15, July), the American government was forced to warn Israel against ground assault in Gaza[x], after a massive protests within America, Washington, Los Angeles, Michigan, San Francisco, Chicago and so on.
The French Ambassador to Israel, Patrick Maisonnave, said that the French government is aware and anxious about the ‘constant anxiety and fear which the families in the south’ 19 miles away from Gaza, Ashdod, for being ‘the hostage of violence’. It seems that he saw the mother’s of Gaza was wandering, looking for their children to feed them.
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said: “The missile attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip has created a situation which threatens a spiraling process of violence and violent counter measures. Israel of course has the right to protect its citizens from rocket attacks.”[xi]
There is always a third opinion like as Russia, the new government of Egypt, has not yet taken any decision on the Gaza attack yet. Earlier in 11 July, Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed to need to stop the armed confrontation in the Gaza strip. And the Egyptian government has proposed a ceasefire[xii] early today (15, July), a halt to seven days of exchange of fire.
It was shocking to read the statement from Stephane Dujjaric, a spokesmen for the UN secretary General Ban Ki- Moon, said that Ban “condemns the recent multiple rocket attacks on Israel from Gaza” and that “these indiscriminate attacks on civilian areas must stop.”. At the same time the secretary general ‘is also deeply worried about the impact on Palestinian families of Israeli military action’[xiii].
Israel, guilty of war crimes
The government of Israel is culpable of many war crimes, so far in the air strikes in the name of Operation Edge, which include; aggression in violation of the UN charter; obvious violation of its obligations as the Occupying Power under the Geneva Convention to protect the civilian population of an Occupied land; using disproportionate and improper force against unarmed society in Gaza strip; using illicit weaponry; and committing crimes against Humanity in the form of imposing an apartheid regime in West Bank and through the relocation of the populace to an occupied territory as it has advanced with its massive settlement programs.
Regardless of the fact that; the ‘Disengagement’ (2005) took 112 Palestinians lives; the 2008, Operation Cast Lead took 1391 Palestinians lives, where 318 were under 18 years of age, 5300 wounded of which 350 was serious and 11, 154 houses were demolished; the Pillar of Defense (2012) killed 171 Palestinians, where 101 were civilians, 1000 wounded, where 971 were civilians and; the recent Operation Protective Edge murdered 187+ of which are children and women, resulting in an cumulative deaths of 2519+ Palestinian bloodshed[xiv], the world governments were the power is vested responds in a unconscientiously tone of voice. Of course, the death of Israeli civilians among the total number of death in all these operations, which is 61,[xv] has to be condemned.
The history and the current scenario reveal the fact that the situation in Palestinian is manslaughter from the part of Israel and resistance from the Palestinians in response of their right to defense, for Israel is the Oppressors, while Palestinians are the Oppressed. As Noam Chomsky said, this isn’t war, its murder: “When Israelis in the occupied territories now claim that they have to defend themselves, they are defending themselves in the sense that any military occupier has to defend itself against the population they are crushing.”
Earlier in this year, the UN Secretary General declared the year 2014 as the ‘year of Solidarity with the Palestinian people’ and pleaded the world governments and population in the effort to eradicate the pain and suffering of the Palestinian people. If that was for real, then this is the time.
Muhammad (S) said: “Fear the prayer of the oppressed, even if he is disbeliever, for there is no barrier (between it and Allah)”
[xv] No Israeli has been reported being killed up to now in the ongoing firing.
