The Benefits of Reading Quran – READING the QURAN [Part 10]
Qur’an is the guidance to mankind, a life planner. Reading, pondering and reflecting upon Qur’an is a virtuous form of worship. To know the benefits one acquire by reading Quran is very important, for one can mould one’s intention and asking for reward in the same terms. Here are few benefits of reading Qur’an.
Prophet (S) said: “Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allah, he will have a reward. And that reward will be multiplied by ten. I am not saying that “Alif, Laam, Meem” is a letter, rather I am saying that “Alif” is a letter, “laam” is a letter and “meem” is a letter.” So increase your recitation of the Qur’an to gain these merits, and to gain the following merit as well.”[i]
Company of Noble angels
Prophet (S) said: “Verily the one who recites the Qur’an beautifully, smoothly and precisely, he will be in the company of the noble and obedient angels. And as for the one who recites with difficulty, stammering or stumbling through its verses, then he will have TWICE that reward.”[ii]
A proof on the Day of Judgment
The Speech of Allah will be a proof for you or against you on the Day of Judgment. You have read it and discarded its lessons; it comes as a proof against you or else otherwise. Prophet (S) said: “…and the Qur’aan is a proof for you or against you…”[iii]
Intercede on the Day of Judgment
Those people who are pleading to others for you, will be busy with his own souls, your father who is working hard out there for you, your mom who would give her life for yours, your best friends who you sometimes loved their your own family, your wife who you said life with her is impossible. Now there are a few entities that would intercede on the Day of Judgment. Qur’an, you read is among them. Qur’an a whole and some chapters in particular intervenes.
Prophet (S) said: “Recite the Qur’an, for on the Day of Resurrection it will come as an intercessor for those who recite it.” [iv]
One of the prophetic tradition states that a chapter with thirty verses will intercede for a man until he was forgotten. It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “There is a soorah of the Quran containing thirty verses which have interceded for a man until he was forgiven”.[v]
Raises the status of a Muslim
The more you recite the more status you attain. If someone follows its commandments and makes Quran part of his or her life, the more Allah will elevate his or her status in this life and hereafter.
Messenger said: “Verily Allah raises some people by this Book and lowers others by it.”
Ibn Qayyim (r) asked: “how can anyone deny that this is the greatest medicine or that this spiritual power gives him the means to ward off pain and defeat it completely?”Yes, it a healing for body and soul. Allah states in Qur’an: “And We send down of the Quran that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe (in Islamic Monotheism and act on it), and it increases the Zaalimoon (polytheists and wrongdoers) nothing but loss”(Qur’an 17: 82)
Dispels anxieties and regrets
Ibn Qayyim (r) said that letting one’s heart in the garden of Quran will bring comfort to his grief and healing for his worries and distress. Imam Bukhari reports a prayer from Ibn Mas’ud (r), where the slave ask Allah to “make the Quran the life of my heart and the light of my breast, and a departure of my sorrow and a release for (my anxieties)” direct to this concept.
Accomplishes an Islamic responsibility
Prophet (S) said: ‘Deen (religion) is An naseehah’ ‘to Allah, His book, His Messenger, the leaders of the people and, their common folk[vi]. The sincerity that is due to the Book of Allaah, as Ibn Rajab Al-Hambalee said, includes having a strong love for it, honoring it and extolling its great status, affirming that it is the Speech of Allaah, seeking to understand its meanings, acting by it, following the orders found in it, spreading its correct understanding, continually studying it, and taking on the good manners that are encouraged in it.[vii]
Among the best of people
Uthman (r) said: “The best of you are the ones who learn the Qur’an and teach it to others”[viii]
Quran leading you to Paradise
The Prophet (S) said: “The Qur’an is an intercessor, something given permission to intercede, and it is rightfully believed in. Whoever puts it in front of him, it will lead him to Paradise; whoever puts it behind him, it will steer him to the Hellfire.”[ix]
Elevate up reading the Quran
The believer can rise up the different levels of Paradise according to amount of Qur’an we memorize. Prophet (S) said: “It will be said to the companion of the Qur’aan: Read and elevate (up through the levels of the Paradise) and beautify your voice as you used to do when you were in the dunyaa! For verily, your position in the Paradise will be at the last verse you recite!”[x]
